Finn den Hertog is a Scottish director and theatre maker, based in Glasgow.
He trained as an actor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating in 2007. After several years acting on stage, television, and radio, he shifted his focus to directing, gaining a practical training through the Young Vic and the National Theatre of Great Britain. He has since become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Scottish theatre.
His theatre work ranges from new writing to devised performance to reimagined classics and often blends music, choreography and immersive theatrical techniques into productions that are emotionally immediate and visually inventive.
He is co-lead artist of award-winning Glasgow based theatre company Groupwork, who specialise in highly physical and visually led storytelling.
He was Associate Artist of National Theatre of Scotland from 2022-2025 and is a regular guest director and lecturer at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and on the MSc Playwriting at the University of Edinburgh.
His recent production of David Ireland’s The Fifth Step premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2024 before transferring to the West End, starring Jack Lowden and Martin Freeman, where it became the first Scottish-directed show filmed for NT Live.
As well as directing theatre he has worked on audio drama for the BBC, short film and radio broadcasts.
